Exam LR

A 37/48
WWW: Excellent attempts to incorporate theory

There is also other mis-en-scene included within the short film. One thing I noticed was that the daughter of the family was wearing wings, this could connote to us that she is like an angel from above and is the saviour and has come to save the dad from his car crash. Also when the dad has a car crash you see glitter appear and this could be instead of blood to show a less shocking version of events. Normally with adverts like this which involves accidents are with dark lighting and dull, however this particular had high key lighting which would add to a light hearted affect which allows the viewers to watch it without feeling anger or quite upset.

VIRAJ JUNEJA...
SUPERSTAR IN THE MAKING

He started in a small town in West London but now is one of the most loved actors around

He is the latest success story to come out from the UK and is following hot on the heels of some serious brit talent. Born Viraj Juneja the 21 year old is already up for best actor in a leading role at the BAFTA’s. For someone who is only 21 we believe there is so much more to come from him and we see him becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Nothing can stop him...

How did you get started?

Well when I was 16 I used to go to many auditions to play parts in school plays and most of the time I would get the role I would have liked. This made me realise that this is something I enjoy and something I am good at so couple of years later I decided to go and audition for this very low key movie called ‘The End’ and I got the role I wanted and from there I got some agents calling me up and we took it from there.

So it’s been nonstop since then?

Yeah, since that lucky break I got with the end I had agents calling me nonstop and have been asked to play many roles in many different movies. It’s been pretty full on to say the least.
So tell us about how you got in to the E4 drama ‘The Carnage’?
It’s pretty simple to be honest one of the directors within The Carnage is a close mate of mine and he asked me if I was up for a role of this guy who has split personalities, I just couldn’t say no.

Tell us more about your character in the carnage?

One of the main reasons I wanted to play this character is that he is different and unique in a way. The directors had the same vision as me, my character you could say was crazy, delusional and much more this is something I loved.

What does the future hold for you?

I don’t want to give too much away but there are a couple deals in the pipeline for me in movies as well as dramas, it’s all work work work.

Who are your inspirations?

I’d say one of my inspirations would be my granddad as he started from the bottom and worked hard to get where he is. But in the acting scene I would say Idris Elba as he started off small and has now become massive all over the world.

What has been the best moment in your career so far?

I would say getting nominated for a BAFTA, I say this because I am only 21 and I would never in a million years thought I would get nominated for one at such a young age, I am truly honoured.

Plan B print texts

Why is this platform being used?
I believe these platforms are being used to try and convey a different message to its audiences and viewers. I believe they are designed to show a certain emotion opposed to e-media and broadsheets. From what we have seen in his TV interviews on shows such as Jonathan Ross and radio interviews on Radio 1 there is a difference as there is like a sort of story behind these print forms.

Do the articles do more than entertain? How?
I believe the articles do more than entertain, I believe they also inform. I believe they do entertain, in this example linked with Plan B interviews with Men's health, The Guardian and The Shortlist you can see this with the way in which he answers questions it is in a way which is not boring and some swear words which could be entertaining for the readers. I also believe they inform as each of the different broadsheets tell different stories, men's health talks about how he trimmed down and tried to get into shape for certain movies. In the Guardian he talks about his life and is sort of like a story from when he started off when he was young to when he was in school to when he first started making music to his albums and ill manors. In the interview with shortlist he talks about his music and awards and his everyday life stories which is similar to his interview with Q magazine in which he is talking to us about his albums which is informing us.

Does this platform allow the audience to participate/contribute?
I believe this platform of print does not really allow the audience to participate and contribute but more learn from these print platforms. I say this as you can not really have a say in what these magazines and newspapers like you would on e media such as Twitter, but you can learn from these platforms as they all have different interviews with Plan B in which he is informing and educating us about his life even though we do not have a say in it.

What codes/conventions of print interviews are apparent in the examples?
The codes and conventions which are shown in the examples are that for e.g. in the Guardian interview there is a sort of like narrator of the story in a way in which he introduces the setting but in this case he introduces Plan B and and what he has achieved and then goes into the interview with Plan B but also at the same time the narrator is sort of telling us what happens in his own words and also the narrator describes how Plan B was in the interview. Also in the interviews I noticed that there are a lot quotes “They were showing some sh*tty rom-com,” Is a quote from the shortlist, I believe this is done to create some realism within the text to prove that it is actually Plan B that is being interviewed. Another thing in which I noticed about the Plan B interviews was that they include some images on next to texts in which the Guardian is the prime example of to sort of show the readers a behind the scenes sort of thing to show that they are included within the interview too.

How is narrative used to tell a story in each text?
In the men's health interview obviously as it is a magazine to do with men the narrative is used to sort of persuade men to become like Plan B and getting into shape especially as he is a famous person and could sort of be a role model to the readers of the magazine. With Plan B saying it was easy for him this may be used to persuade the readers of the magazine. In the Q interview to help the story he talks about his albums and music and sort of talks in slang which readers of Q may relate to and may understand his message as he is not speaking in a serious tone. In the shortlist interview it has more of a like chilled atmosphere to it as some of the questions aren't the most of serious questions and this narrative may helped tell the story as it like an interview with one of his friends. In the Plan B interview with the Guardian the narrative is used to tell a story in which he talks about his life and growing up and how hard it was for him which is sort of like a story itself. Relating this to the theory of Vladmir Propp Plan B is sort of like a hero and the princess at the same time as when he was younger he needed saving from the hard life that he lived and then became a hero as he saved himself from the hard life and became someone famous, also the villains would be the people that didn't treat him as equals when he was younger and before he became famous. Also relating it to another theory most of his life was disequilibrium up until he started making music and was his equilibrium in which he then became famous.

Doctor Who Key Magazine Conventions

Title – From the Doctor who front cover we can see that the title ‘Doctor Who’ is clearly visible at the top of the magazine cover. This is so it is easy and clear to see, the title also links in with Doctor Who as in it is like a sort of theme font that you would only notice when you see Doctor Who. A part of the Doctor Who sign is covered by one of the Doctor Who’s which shows flexibility and a sense of recognition on the part of the loyal audience.

Slogan – A slogan is something which is short and catchy which can also be a phrase and is used to sum up the magazines image and stick in the readers mind. On this Doctor Who front cover we can see the slogan is ‘The day of the Doctor’. This gives you an indication of what you will be going to read in the magazine as there are three different doctors on the cover this links with it.

Central image – Most magazines employ a strong central image however in this case there are three different individuals but one is at the centre of all of them, which may show he has the most power out of all of them. As you can see all three of doctors are looking straight at us as if they are wanting us to buy the magazine themselves sort of like drawing us in.

Cover lines – When the cover is shown by the central image you would see text around to advertise the contents of the magazine. These also link with the cover image and have a meaning to why they are said. One of them in this front cover would be ‘The doctors past comes back to haunt him’ this links in with the central image as the main doctor who is in the middle is surrounded by the other two doctors and they are most likely the past.

Free offer – Some magazines came with small gifts and promotions, short messages would alert the reader. The gifts are closely targeted to those who are the magazines core consumers. On this front cover it says 12 anniversary art cards, 9 downloads of Doctor Who adventures and you could win blu ray, DVD’s, CD’s and books which all add to the promotion of the magazine.

Colour scheme – In most magazines there tends to be a limited colour scheme so it doesn’t look so confusing. Certain colours are used to try and portray a certain vibe. In this front cover there are mainly darker colours and no bright colours and this links in with the main image as they are not smiling because if they were smiling and the colour of the magazine was bright like a sort of yellow it wouldn’t link and would therefore confuse the potential consumers.

Name checks – Name checks on the front cover act as a clear indicator of the cultural territory this where the magazine focuses on something in which those consumers can link to. So for e.g. on this certain front cover it says inside and shows tardises which is something if you watch Doctor Who would understand and draws the viewers in.

Language – The language on the front cover would also be significant, it would be snappy and efficient this is so because readers would read the front covers at a very short time possible and wouldn’t want to see a whole lot of writing. So the language used on the front cover would have to be sort of USP’s to try and draw the readers in. Also using jargon on that certain magazine would help. The writing on the Doctor Who cover is bald and stands out also most of the language is short and snappy and there are not many words on the front cover as there is.

Bar code, date and price – For straightforward commercial selling purposes there as to be these three things on the front cover. The pricing and barcode are seen on the Doctor Who front cover at the near bottom left of the magazine and is visible for everyone to see.

The ‘real’ target audience – It is not uncommon for magazines to target an audience that might not immediately target that audience. For e.g. a magazine may officially target 17 year olds but 13-14 year olds could still read them. In this case for Doctor Who I believe it would target a whole wide audience. This is due that it comes on at BBC1 on Saturdays and also on prime time showings on TV, so as a result would target families, teenagers, adults and even elderly people. However I believe the magazine would target a much younger audience due to the fact it is a magazine and older ages may not want to read magazines and would rather read newspapers.

Plan B radio 1 interview

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00pvgb9

In this BBC Radio 1 interview from Fearne Cotton with Plan B they talk about his film, his music and his link with Ill manors and how he got the soundtrack to the Ill Manors movie.

Plan B first talks about how he is in the making of Ill manors and still doing the finishing touches to the movie by doing little parts within the movie. He also talks about how he is lacking sleep as he is also trying to complete his album which links to the movie called ill manors. His latest single which he also talks about is called ill manors and Fearne then gives a little snippet of the song and then says the song is going to be played everyday of that week so that Plan B is being promoted as well as his movie and his album. This is the difference between radio stations and TV programmes for example as Radio stations are always being played and could benefit the artist more however it is being played to a smaller audience than say someone at Jonathan Ross.

Plan B then goes on to talk about how is song Ill manors was influenced by a German artist called Peter Fox. From the song you can tell the both of the songs have similar beats but Plan B goes on to talk about how he wanted to put his own spin on the song and make it more British in which he did. He also shows how thankful he was in how he was allowed to use the song. From the radio 1 interview we can see that it is different to what we have seen before in shows such as Jonathan Ross as in other shows he just doesn't talk about his music and film but also other political stuff. However as he is on radio 1 and it is based around music he is going to predominantly talk about his music, which includes his single, album and film which is all a synergy as it all links together to promote similar things.

5 magazine covers

I chose this magazine cover as it is similar to something I would want to do on my own magazine cover in that the main actor would be the center of attention and the writing would on the right hand side of him. Also I like the colour on the front cover of this magazine.

I chose this magazine cover as I like the layout of the magazine. The main part I like is on the right hand side in where there is writing on his blazer which is something different and unique which is something I would want to do.

I chose this magazine as the Eminem in this front cover is a very similar position to how I would want my actor to be standing. Also the title 'VIBE' also stands out in the background and is something similar to what I want on my magazine.

I chose this magazine cover as I like the colour in the background and it looks different to other magazine covers which makes it stand out from the rest. Also I like the serious pose in which they guy is in as it is as if he is looking at you and drawing you in.

I chose this magazine cover as I like the colour on the magazine in which Drake the person on the cover is the same colour as the background and this is something I would like to try and do on my front cover. The text in which it says 'Billboard' then also stands out due the colour in it so it shows it is appealing.

Website and chat show analysis

http://www.illmanors.com/#scene-0
Website
On the website the things it includes are:

  • Trailer
  • Synopsis
  • Ben Drew information
  • Stills
  • Videos
  • Buy now
  • Links
  • Reactions
  • Album
I believe all of these are included for certain things. But they all have the main idea of trying to persuade the viewers into going to watch the movie. The trailer would give you a sneak peak of what the movie is about. the synopsis will include a brief summary of what the story line is. Ben Drew information is included as he is a famous music artist so this may appeal to some of his fans. You then get stills which is also images of the characters to see how they look like. Then videos of insights into the story line again. A buy now section if you would want to buy it. Links to other websites such as Plan B's own website if you really like him and are a big fan. Reactions would include quotes from sources such as movie stars and newspapers and magazines. Finally the Ill Manors album which is Plan B's album which also relates to the movie.
The website makes use of synergy as it uses many different ways of promoting the film. These ways are trailers, videos, links and also Facebook and Twitter in where you can win prizes. So by using the Twitter example you would have to follow their Twitter account to win prizes almost as if they are making you follow them and by following them you would also find out about more about the movie for example.

The Jonathan Ross would target psychographic groups which would be mainly mainstreamers. I say this as Jonathan Ross is shown on Saturday at between 9 and 10pm which is sort of near prime time for when people watch TV. It also attracts a wide range of audiences due to the fact it as many different famous people on the show. The main psychographic group for Soccer AM would be aspirers and strugglers, I say this because aspirers may aspire to be like the individuals on Soccer AM which could be mainly footballers and strugglers because the programme is at 10am in the morning and try to seek escape and in Soccer AM it is not a serious show and is more funny and they could seek escape from this, also the famous people on Soccer AM would not be as famous as people on the Jonathan Ross show. The demographic group to Jonathan Ross would be B, C1, C2. I say this as these are mainly people in the middle class and Jonathan Ross and the guests on the show would be people these demographic groups would know of. For Soccer AM I would say C2, D, E as they are more lower class and Soccer AM comes on at Sky 1 which is a free channel so they would be able to watch it.

Jonathan Ross show is broadcasted on ITV1 which is one of the leading TV channels in England and is also on at prime time on a Saturday night, this shows how big his programme is as he gets this main slot. Soccer AM is broadcasted on Saturdays in the morning and on Sky 1 which is on before a early kick off in football, so it links within the sport itself.

The audience appeal would be different on each different show. In Jonathan Ross he speaks in a more political way and it looks as if he is watching what he is saying as he is on a big show. However he is different on Soccer AM as he speaks in a different type of jargon but not majorly different and kind of as a joke with the presenters as it is a less serious show. On Jonathan Ross he talks about society and on Soccer AM he talks about his albums and music. He is similar in both texts as he tries to get messages across to the viewers and different in the way that he speaks about different stuff and about different things.

Ill manors film research

Ill manors film research

Research all the Institutions involved in the production of Ill Manors. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.

The Studios producing the film "Ill Manors" were Film London Microwave, BBC Films and Aimimage. These institutions are low budget British film industries in terms of making and funding films. BBC films is quite a well known industry who help out and have helped out a lot of people and films in terms of the production funds.

How much Ill Manors cost to produce (its budget)?

The film "Ill Manors" cost £100,000 to produce and made £453, 570 from box office alone.

How was Ill Manors funded?

In order for Plan B to raise the funds for post-production, he went on tour in 2010 and 2011 performing "The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour". The rights to Ill Manors were sold to Revolver Entertainment in April 2011.

What is the target audience for Ill Manors?

The targeted audience demographic for ill manors would be the 15 - 25 year olds, generally the teenagers as they can relate to the situations going on in the storyline of the film. Also, it because of the fact that teenagers of this demographic like to watch films which involve a lot of swearing, violence and action along with a good plot therefore appealing to them in this sense.

Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?

The main distributor of ill manors is revolver entertainment as the rights to the film were sold to them in April 2005. The film made a total income from box office alone, £453, 570 which is a huge profit to the £100,000 budget

How was Ill Manors promoted?

The film ill manors was promoted through revolver entertainment as they were given the rights to the film. However, along with this factor, another was the fact that ill manors was helped to become big through the music videos by plan b to help promote the story line as well as what the film was about.

Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?

Comparing ill manors to a big budget blockbuster you can see many similarities as well as differences. A similarity that both have a protagonist or main character, in the end survives or makes it big in terms of the story-line of the film. In ill manors, the character is the only one to survive out of his gang and goes off to make something of his life. A difference between the two; other than the obvious fact that it’s a low budget film; is that the characters in the movie weren't well recognised actors but just normal people acting.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.

The trailer for ill manors promotes the film and appeals to the age demographic aimed at by this film, the 15 - 25 year olds. This is done through the use of a music video as teenagers are more likely to watch music videos therefore getting a point across in a music video is an effective way of communicating to this demographic. The trailer clearly portrays the lives people who have been brought up in deprived areas such as council estates and the effect it has had on them whilst they were growing up. This hooks the audience into the narrative because, it gives the audience a realistic insight of how people from deprived areas are coping and the problems they are facing every day of their lives. Also, the voice over of Plan B almost raping instead of telling the story in just words in the trailer is effective on the audience. This is because it could highlight how he directed/produced the film and it also conveys to the audience that Ill Manors is a reflection of his life when he was growing up in a council estate.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?

The trailer for ill manors shows different characters as well as different scenes. This therefore represents the amount of different story lines in the film and the fact that they all link and cross in one way or another. Also the use of different spectacles in the trailer therefore hooks an audience.

Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?

The difference between an 18 certificate to a 15 certificate is that a 15 certificate includes such things as strong language, a lot of scene consisting of violence, strong indications of sexual content as well as sexual scenes, discrimination, regular use of drugs and nudity.
A 18 certificate on the other hand is similar but with more of certain topics. It includes such things as extreme strong language and regularity of swear words. A vast use of sexual language as well as sexual intercourse, blood and gore and much references to discriminatory language and ethnicities.
