L/R-
Both editing and sound are used in the sequence to structure the narrative. There are many different ways in which editing is used within the sequence and mainly a lot of match on action shots, this is where you see an action going to happen but then before you see this action happen you see it in a different shot. An example in the sequence of this is where one of the crew was about to go down into the water and the match on action then shows the person coming down in to the water already in which we see this smooth transition happen. The match on action allows the narrative to progress in an orderly manner as it is also continuity editing in where everything that happens is going on in an orderly manner. We also see an eye line shot in this sequence where we see what the person is looking at and then we are where that person is looking at. Both diegetic and non diegetic sound is used within the sequence. There is at first non diegetic sound which is parallel to what we are watching and it is as if we are trying to solve something due to this non diegetic music, once we find the penguins slow motion comes in place and the non diegetic sound changes and it is as if we have now solved the mystery and that was to find the penguins. The non diegetic sound also helps the narrative to progress as it is like David Attenborough is telling a story to us with the help of non diegetic sound helps tell the story. There is also a non diegetic sound where we hear dialogue from the crew members which also helps the narrative to progress through the help of the narrators so we about everything that is going on. The sound could also link to the theory of Propp in which the voice over is the narrator which is the introducing of characters, editing also does this as it mainly focuses on the main characters. There is also narrative included which is the equilibrium which is theory of Todorov which shows there is a sign of calmness which there is within the sequence. Barthe includes the theory of enigma and action codes, this is included within the opening sequence when the sequence is filmed underwater which suggests danger as we are now in a area of the unknown.
